Texting isn’t just for teens anymore. It’s for Internet marketers.

A new report from PewResearchCenter shows that texting among adults has risen 7 percent in under a year.

Some 72 percent of American adults now send text messages, compared to 87 percent of American teens. The Pew report shows that texting among adults shot up from 65 percent in September 2009 to 72 percent in May 2010.

So What Does This Mean For Internet Marketers?

For Internet marketers, text message marketing is an affordable new channel that they can use to directly connect with potential customers.

Unlike other marketing channels, text message marketing provides several distinct benefits:

  • Speed: Messages are sent instantly, making it easy to send time-sensitive information.
  • Impressions: Unlike email or social media messages, people are more likely to read text messages because the messages instantly appear on their phone’s screen.
  • Information Sharing: Like social media, people can share messages about coupons and discounts to friends. Text messaging has a distinct advantage over social media – A cell phone typically contains close family and friends that are more impressionable than friends and acquaintances on social media sites.

Text message marketing does have some limitations. Compiling a text message subscription list that reflects your customer base can be difficult. There also is the issue of the number of characters a text message can have in a message (160 characters).

But considering the growing adoption of text messaging, this channel is only going to continue to grow thereby increasing its value.
