Want to know what’s happening right now in the blogosphere? The leading blog search engine in the world, Technorati, has your answer. Recently they published their annual State of the Blogosphere report where they surveyed over 1,000 active bloggers from all over the world to discover what is driving the blog industry and to find out exactly where the blogosphere is headed in the coming years.

The report analyzed data collected through their indexing of nearly 133 million blogs and also surveyed a random sample of their 1.2 million registered bloggers to come up with a fascinating look into the demographics, participation, and even profitability of blogs in 2008.

Their findings offer an excellent insight into exactly why blogging is becoming even more profitable than ever while also suggesting that there still remains great opportunity for new bloggers to excel in the blogosphere. Here are some interesting statistics based on their raw data:

  • 7.4 million blogs have had a new post in the past 120 days
  • 1.4 million blogs have been posted to in the last 7 days
  • 900,000 blogs had a new post in the last 24 hours
  • Only 74,000 blogs had a Technorati  Authority Rating of 50+ (Rating is based on the number of incoming links to the blog in the past 6 months)

According to a 2008 Universal McCann study referenced in the Technorati report, 77% of active internet users read blogs. This should be encouraging to people entering the blogosphere as with only 74,000 highly rated blogs, there is a significant amount of traffic to be had by those bloggers who are able to gain the attention of even a small segment of blog readers.

On the issue of profits, the report returned even more encouraging news to those looking to make money with blogging. The mean annual revenue of blogs with advertising was nearly $6,000 while those blogs with 100,000 or more visitors boasted a mean revenue in excess of $75,000.

This entirely ignores the revenues gained by many corporate blogs who have used this unique outlet as way to build brand awareness, increase customer interaction, and better promote their products using the blogosphere. While only 12% of all bloggers surveyed were corporate, the remainder being either personal (79%) or professional (46%), company specific blogs cannot be underestimated in their effectiveness. Note: many of the bloggers surveyed fit into more than one category because of multiple blog sites.

The study also included data on the demographics of the blogging community as well as insights about the future of the blogosphere by some of today’s leading bloggers.
